Terms of Service

Plain English, and an accurate description of what Classmax actually does. Please also read our Privacy Policy and what Classmax works with.

Who we are and what these terms cover

Classmax ("Classmax", "we", "us") provides a study tool made up of a Chrome extension and a web application at app.classmax.ai. These terms form an agreement between you and Classmax and apply whenever you use either.

If you do not agree with them, please do not use Classmax.

What Classmax does

Classmax connects to your university's learning platform, reads your courses, assignments, announcements and course materials, and uses them to give you an AI assistant that knows your actual coursework — answering questions, laying out deadlines, generating study material, and giving written feedback on your drafts.

We support Blackboard Learn and Canvas only. We do not support Moodle, D2L Brightspace, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams course sites, or publisher platforms such as McGraw Connect, Pearson MyLab, Cengage or WileyPLUS. The current list is always at /supported, and you should check it before subscribing.

Our support is built per platform rather than per university, so a Blackboard or Canvas institution we have never seen before will usually work. We cannot promise it will: universities configure these systems differently, and some hide coursework in places we cannot read. This is why we do not take payment until Classmax has actually synced your work — see Payment below.

The browser extension and what it reads

The Classmax extension runs in Chrome and reads your learning platform using the session you are already signed in to. It does not ask for, store or transmit your university username or password, and it cannot sign in as you. If you sign out of your university portal, Classmax cannot read it.

The extension only runs on your learning platform's pages and on classmax.ai. It reads coursework — course names, assignments, deadlines, announcements, uploaded materials and grades where your institution shows them. It does not read your email, your browsing on other sites, or anything outside those pages.

You can disconnect at any time in Settings, which stops all future syncing. What we already hold is covered by our Privacy Policy, including how to have it deleted.

Classmax is Chrome-only for now. Safari and Firefox are not supported.

Academic integrity

Classmax is built to help you produce your own work, not to produce it for you. Draft Review gives you feedback on writing you have already written — it explains problems and suggests directions, and it deliberately does not rewrite arguments for you.

You are responsible for following your institution's academic integrity rules, which vary and which override anything we say here. Submitting AI-generated work as your own may breach them. Do not use Classmax to do that, and do not use it in an assessment where AI assistance is prohibited.

We may suspend accounts we believe are being used to circumvent academic integrity rules.

AI output, and what it is worth

Classmax uses large language models. They are useful and they are also fallible: they can be wrong, out of date, or confidently mistaken. Check anything that matters before you rely on it — particularly deadlines, marking criteria and factual claims.

Estimated grades are estimates. They are our model's reading of your draft against the brief and the grading scale we believe your institution uses. They are not a prediction of your actual mark, they carry no weight with your university, and nothing in Classmax should be treated as a promise about your results.

You remain responsible for your own work and your own deadlines.

Eligibility and your account

Classmax is for university students aged 18 or over. You must give accurate information when you sign up, keep your login details to yourself, and tell us promptly at team@classmax.ai if you think someone else has access to your account.

One account per person. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

Free and paid plans

Classmax has a free tier and a paid plan (Classmax Pro). Current prices and what each tier includes are on our pricing page. Paid plans are billed through Stripe on a recurring basis — monthly or annual, as you choose — and renew automatically until you cancel.

We will always tell you the price and the billing period before you pay. If we change the price of a plan you are already on, we will tell you before it takes effect and you can cancel first.

Founding-member pricing, where offered, is a rate locked for as long as your subscription stays active and uninterrupted.

Payment: we do not charge until Classmax has worked

We will not take a card from you until Classmax has connected to your learning platform and actually brought back your coursework. This is enforced in our systems, not just promised here: checkout is blocked until your account holds synced work.

If Classmax cannot read your institution's platform, you should not subscribe, and we would rather you did not.

Cancelling and refunds

You can cancel at any time yourself, in Settings → Manage subscription, which opens the Stripe billing portal. No email required. Cancelling stops the next payment and you keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Your first payment carries a 14-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Tell us within 14 days at team@classmax.ai and we refund it in full. This is at least as generous as the statutory cancellation right for consumers in the UK and EU, and we apply it to everyone wherever they live.

Beyond that: if Classmax stops being able to sync with your institution's supported platform and we cannot restore it within a reasonable time, we will refund your current billing period in full. The core promise failed, so the money comes back.

We do not otherwise pro-rate part-used periods, which is the ordinary practice for subscriptions. If something has gone wrong and none of the above quite fits, email us anyway — we would rather sort it out than have you feel stung.

The service will change, and may break

Classmax is an actively developed product. Features will be added, changed and sometimes removed. Universities also change their platforms without warning, which can break syncing until we catch up.

We aim to keep Classmax available and working but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. If a failure is ours and it materially stops you using what you paid for, the refund terms above apply.

Your work stays yours

You keep all rights in the drafts, notes and other content you put into Classmax. We do not claim ownership of it and we do not sell it.

You give us permission to process it only so far as running the service requires — storing it, and sending it to the AI providers listed in our Privacy Policy so they can generate your feedback and answers. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly who those providers are and what they may do with it.

Classmax itself — the software, the interface and the brand — remains ours.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to break, overload or reverse-engineer Classmax; do not use it to access an account or a learning platform you are not entitled to; do not resell or share your access; and do not use it to produce material that is unlawful or that violates your institution's rules.

We may suspend or close accounts that do these things.

Ending the agreement

You can stop using Classmax at any time by removing the extension and closing the app. To have your account and its data deleted, email privacy@classmax.ai and we will do it within 30 days. We may suspend or close an account for a serious or repeated breach of these terms, and we will tell you why unless we are legally prevented from doing so.

If we close your account without cause while you are paid up, we will refund the unused part of your period.

Our liability

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited — including your statutory rights as a consumer.

Subject to that, Classmax is a study aid and we are not liable for your academic results, missed deadlines, or decisions you make on the basis of AI output. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Governing law and your consumer rights

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.

If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protections of the law of the country you live in. Where your local consumer law gives you rights we cannot exclude — including cancellation and refund rights — those apply in addition to, and where relevant instead of, what is written here.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Classmax changes. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Classmax after that means you accept the updated terms; if you would rather not, you can cancel and, if you have paid for a period you will not now use, ask us for a refund of it.
